If one end of a length of rope is completely frayed into individual fibers, at what point along its length does the object become, or cease to be, rope? Metaphorically, this is the concern of Fray and its antecedent piece in three short movements, Fray: Three Studies. These pieces explore, in musical terms, different ways that material can coalesce into or sever out of recognizable categories.
